Relations between Georgia and Hungary
Diplomatic relations between Georgia and Hungary were established on May 14, 1992.
The Embassy of Georgia to Hungary opened in 2009.
The Embassy of Hungary to Georgia opened in 2008.
The main fields of cooperation
Georgia and Hungary enjoy active cooperation in bilateral and multilateral formats. The existing legal framework between the two countries includes number of international agreements and facilitates cooperation in the fields of economy, defense, education, tourism, healthcare, etc.
Since 2013 the Intergovernmental Commission on Economic Cooperation has been functioning between Georgia and Hungary, aimed at strengthening trade and economic ties between the two countries.
Hungarian company Wizz Air carries out direct flights from Kutaisi to Budapest, as well as to number of directions across Europe.
The field of education represents an important dimension of cooperation, as number of agreements have been signed recently between different institutions of the two countries. Furthermore, since 2014, the Government of Hungary offers annual scholarships to Georgian students at the leading Hungarian universities.
Cooperation in the field of culture has been developing dynamically. A square named after Shota Rustaveli and the monument of the poet has been opened in Budapest. In the Hungarian town of Kiskőrös, the monument of Grigol Abashidze was put up in the Memorial Museum of the famous poet Sándor Petőfi. There is a monument of the famous Hungarian artist Mihály Zichy in Tbilisi, who created the illustrations to the Shota Rustaveli’s poem “The Knight in the Panther's Skin”.
In 2014, Georgia’s State Award “Order of Honour” was presented to the son of the Hungarian Brigadier General László Török, who tragically lost his life in 2001 in Abkhazia, Georgia, while performing his official duties as a member of the UN Observer Mission in Georgia.
